Tough Week for Daddy

It's been a tough week for daddy.

It all started with a failed eye surgery on Monday to fix daddy's "perforated cornea." You know it's not good when the surgeon comes out and says to mommy, "I'm not sure that what we did was the best thing to do." (Yes he really said that.) That led to a post-op appointment where the doctors basically said, "Oh $hit, we better send him to UCSF where they have real doctors."

This was the first time that I've seen daddy depressed and scared. My eyes are just starting to open up so I'm not really used to seeing yet, but it is pretty cool. I can see how not being able to see would be pretty scary. Daddy likes to be the rock of the family and doesn't want to be a burden on anyone. Now he's very reliant on mommy and feels like he can't protect the family like he used to be able to. I think it's a hard change for him.

Fortunately, the UCSF doctors were great. They rushed daddy into surgery on Thursday and fixed him right up. They un-did everything the first doctor did, grafted in some donor cornea tissue, and closed up the hole. They told mommy that things "went great and looked beautiful." I gave him a high five after he got out of surgery (yes, he felt it). I'm so proud of him.

I've been a bit nervous since mommy's driven up to SF every day for the last six days and this is really the first time she's driven since the accident. Fortunately, she did very well and everyone is safe at home. I think we have one more trip to SF before Christmas.

Daddy's eyes are very light sensitive right now (he wears his sunglasses at night) and he's putting lots of drops in his eyes. I think he's doing really well...but it's a long road to recovery (like two to three months before his vision gets better). I know he's resting up so that he'll be able to see me clearly on my birthday!
